1. Start with Tahini and Lemon

Place the tahini and fresh lemon juice in a food processor. Blend for about one minute until the mixture becomes creamy and slightly lighter in color.

This small step helps create a smoother texture later, so it is worth taking the extra minute.

2. Add Garlic and Seasoning

Add the minced garlic, salt, and two tablespoons of cold water. Blend again for about 30 seconds.

Taste the mixture at this point. If you prefer a stronger lemon or garlic flavor, you can adjust it before adding the chickpeas.

3. Blend the Chickpeas

Add the drained chickpeas and blend for 2–3 minutes. Stop once or twice to scrape the sides of the food processor if necessary.

If the hummus is too thick, add another tablespoon of cold water and continue blending until you reach the consistency you like.

For especially smooth hummus, avoid rushing this step. A little extra blending can make the texture noticeably creamier.

4. Serve and Garnish

Transfer the hummus to a shallow serving bowl. Use the back of a spoon to make a small circular well in the center.

Drizzle the olive oil over the top, then add a few whole chickpeas. A small sprinkle of cumin or paprika can add both flavor and color.

Helpful Tips

Fresh lemon juice gives hummus a brighter flavor than bottled lemon juice. Also, always taste the hummus before serving because the amount of lemon, garlic, and salt can easily be adjusted to suit your preference.

Homemade hummus is delicious with warm pita bread and fresh vegetables. It also works well as a spread in sandwiches or as part of a Middle Eastern-style breakfast.

Once you learn this simple method, you can easily make hummus whenever you want a quick, fresh, and satisfying homemade dip.
